VPN on a D-Link router: firmware client or a second router
A D-Link connects to Ben's VPN only through an OpenVPN or PPTP client in its firmware. Check the router’s settings for such a client first. This applies to the DIR-842, the DIR-825 and every other DIR model. The router then needs only a login and a server from your account page.
OpenVPN on a D-Link in 4 steps
-
Get a router login
Press Show login and password under Router → Other routers on the account page. The login and the password appear at once. Both become active after about 2 minutes.
-
Download a server’s file
Find the server you need in the list and press its Download .ovpn button. Each file works for 1 server only. For another country, download that server’s file.
-
Import the file into the D-Link
Open the OpenVPN client in the router’s settings and import the file. The file contains no login or password. Enter both from the account page when the router asks for them.
-
Connect the router
Enable the OpenVPN client on the router. The file also lists the same server over TCP as a second address. Try that address if the connection fails.
PPTP-only firmware needs no file
The PPTP form needs 3 values from the account page. The server address is an IP from the list. The login and the password are the same as for OpenVPN. The encryption is 128-bit MPPE. Set it where the firmware offers this option.
A second router for a D-Link without a client
Leave the D-Link connected to your provider. Connect a second router with the Ben's VPN app to it by cable. The app runs on these routers:
- Keenetic and Netcraze routers with a model code from our list and firmware 5.0 and newer;
- OpenWrt routers with a supported official release and 256 MB of RAM or more;
- MikroTik routers with an ARM64, ARMv7 or x86 processor, 256 MB of RAM or more and a supported RouterOS 7 build.
The other option is the Ben's VPN app on each phone, computer or TV.
Questions about a D-Link connection
Support 24/7: the chat on this site, Telegram @bensvpn and [email protected].
The firmware has both OpenVPN and PPTP. Which one should I use?
OpenVPN. Its file includes a fallback address, the same server over TCP. PPTP has no fallback address. Use PPTP only when OpenVPN does not connect on the router.
Can the D-Link and another router use one login at the same time?
No. A second connection with the same login disconnects the first router. The router that connected last stays online.
What happens to the router login when my subscription ends?
The D-Link stops connecting. Router access needs an active subscription. The login and the password are not deleted. They work again after you renew.
Does a second router need a subscription of its own?
No. A one-time code from the account page connects the router app to your account. One subscription covers all your devices. An e-mail address must be linked to the account.
Plans with no device limit
One subscription covers the router login, the second router and the apps on your devices.
