waipu.tv and Joyn outside Germany

waipu.tv: no viewing outside the EU
The paid waipu.tv packages work during travel in other EU countries. The free package does not work in those countries. According to waipu.tv, licensing rules prevent any viewing outside the EU. From the Germany location, the service sees a German address. The other waipu.tv rules still apply to a connection through a VPN. Away from your home network, RTL and ProSieben channels need the waipu.tv mobile option.

Joyn: limited outside Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Joyn is available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Joyn help page says it works only in part abroad, for licensing reasons. With a German address, Joyn sees a viewer from Germany. Joyn still decides whether a particular programme plays. Streaming services can block addresses that belong to a VPN.
Germany on a phone or computer
Open the location list with Location under the server card. Find Germany with Find location and select the row. The app then connects if the account has a subscription. Without a subscription, the app first shows the plans.

Install the TV app
Android TV devices (Android TV 10 and newer) install the app from Google Play. Our APK file for TV is the other option. Apple TV (tvOS 17 and newer) gets the app from the App Store page of the iPhone app.

Enter the 8-digit code from your phone
Guest-account codes are not valid on a TV. On a phone with a guest account, press Link e-mail first. Then choose Sign in with a code on the TV. In the phone app, open Account → Sign in on another device. Enter the 8-digit code on the TV within 3 minutes.

Choose Germany
Press Location on the TV screen and select Germany in the list. The TV connects at once while Automatically connect when changing location is ticked.

I am on holiday inside the EU. Do I need the Germany location?
Usually not for waipu.tv, because its paid packages work in other EU countries. Joyn is fully available only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Can I buy a subscription on the TV without using a phone?
Yes, Apple TV and Android TV with Google Play sell subscriptions on the TV. The purchase goes through the App Store or Google Play. After the purchase, the TV creates its own account. A TV without Google Play cannot buy a subscription. Pay on the website or in the phone app, then sign the TV in with a code.
Can my phone and TV share one subscription?
Yes, one subscription covers all your devices, the TV included. The TV joins the account with the code from your phone.
Is the German location in Frankfurt?
Germany has one location, and you cannot choose a city in it. Frankfurt appears next to it in our list of countries.
