VPN on an ASUS router: an OpenVPN client on any firmware
The built-in VPN client of stock ASUS firmware accepts the OpenVPN file from your Ben's VPN account page. All home devices can then use our server. Newer firmware can limit this to the devices you choose. The menu with the client depends on the firmware version.
Firmware 3.0.0.4.388 and newer: VPN Fusion in 4 steps
-
Download the server file
The file is on your account page, on the Other routers tab of the Router section. Without a login on that tab, click Show login and password first. Then click Download .ovpn in the row of the server you need.
-
Create a profile
Sign in to the ASUS admin page at router.asus.com. Open VPN Fusion in the VPN section. Add a profile with the plus icon, set its type to OpenVPN and name it after the country.
-
Import the file
Press Import .ovpn file and choose the downloaded file. After the upload, the profile needs the router login and password from your account page.
-
Enable the profile
Press Apply and Enable. The status Connected means that the profile works.
VPN Fusion: all devices by default, or the ones you choose
A new VPN Fusion profile applies to every device at home. To limit it, disable Apply to all devices in the profile. Then tick the devices that need the VPN, such as the TV and the games console. The rest of the network keeps its direct connection.
Firmware 386 and earlier: the VPN Client tab
Firmware 386 and earlier has no VPN Fusion. The client is under Advanced Settings → VPN → VPN Client. There, Add profile opens a window with a tab for each protocol. On the OpenVPN tab, enter any description and the login and password from your account page. Choose the .ovpn file with Choose File and press Upload. Confirm with OK after the upload.
The new profile has an Activate button in the list. Press it to start the connection. A tick in the row means that the router is connected.
Both menus also offer PPTP, without a file. In the older window, enter the server address in the field labelled VPN Server. This is a field name, not the server feature of the router. Under that field, enter your router login and password. Keep PPTP as a fallback for a failed OpenVPN connection. Its encryption is much weaker.
VPN Server and Instant Guard: not needed for Ben's VPN
Both features work in the other direction. They give your laptop or phone access to the home network from outside, for example from a hotel. The router connection to Ben's VPN uses neither of them. Their settings stay as they are.

ASUS routers: 4 questions
Support 24/7: the chat on this site, Telegram @bensvpn and [email protected].
I have an AiMesh system. Where do I configure the VPN?
Only on the main router of the system, the one with the internet line. The nodes relay its network. Devices connected to the nodes use the same profile.
Why does the profile ask for a login after I import the file?
The .ovpn file from your account describes the server and contains no login. Enter the router login and password from the account page. The same pair works for every server in the list and for PPTP.
How do I check which firmware my ASUS has?
The number is at the top of the admin page, next to Firmware Version. From 3.0.0.4.388 up, the router has VPN Fusion. With 386 or a lower number, use the VPN Client tab.
Can someone help me with the setup?
Yes, through Support 24/7. Open the chat with the Support button in the app or use the contacts page. Include the router model and the firmware version.
