VPN for Steam Deck: install the AppImage and connect

Ben's VPN runs on Steam Deck as the Linux AppImage, in SteamOS Desktop Mode. The DEB file does not install on SteamOS 3. The system is built on Arch. For a regular Linux PC, see VPN for Linux.

version 1.21.1 · AppImage, 125.0 MB

Other systems: all downloads.

4 steps in Desktop Mode

  1. Open Desktop Mode

Press the STEAM button. In its menu, choose Power → Switch to Desktop. All further steps happen on the desktop.

  2. Give the deck account a password

The deck user has no password by default. The app needs one to install its network adapter. Run passwd in Konsole and enter a password of your choice twice. If the account already has a password, skip this step.

  3. Download the AppImage and open it

Open this page on the Deck and press the download button at the top. In Konsole, run chmod +x ~/Downloads/Bens*.AppImage. Then open the file from the Downloads folder.

  4. Connect for the first time

You are in a guest account from the first launch. Press Connect. The Buy Ben's VPN window shows the plans while no subscription is active. If you paid on your phone or PC, choose Already have a subscription? → Sign in to account there. The first connection also asks to install the network adapter. Confirm it, then enter the password of the deck user. The adapter installation finishes within 30 seconds. The app then repeats the connection automatically.

Choosing a location on the Deck

Location under the server card opens the list of locations. Fastest chooses a nearby location. Use it when the country does not matter. Previous in the same window returns the location you used before.

Plans with no device limit

There is no separate Steam Deck plan. The plan on your account applies on the Deck after you sign in.

Bonus months come with purchases on this site. Refunds follow our refund policy. Send the request within 14 days of payment.

4 questions about Steam Deck

Support 24/7: the chat on this site, Telegram @bensvpn and [email protected].

Can the Deck use the subscription from my phone?

Yes, through the same account. A one-time code saves you from typing an e-mail address. On the phone, open Account → Sign in on another device. The 8-digit code there is valid for 3 minutes. On the Deck, press Connect. Then choose Already have a subscription? → Sign in to account → Sign in with code and enter the code.

Can some traffic bypass the VPN on the Deck?

Yes, by address. Open Tunnel and choose Manual. List the domains or IP addresses that should use your own connection, one per line. Reconnect to apply the change.

Are all countries available on the Deck?

Yes. The Deck shows the same location list as your other devices. Any plan includes the full list.

How do I contact support from the Deck?

Support 24/7 answers in the app chat. Press Support under the server card to open it.
